It’s a little like Salinger’s or should I say Holden’s musing that a really good book is when you have the irrisitible urge to call the author up in the middle of the night and talk to them, be wintdrson with them; you feel like they are one of your own in some indescribable but irriducible way. This was a very provocative read for me. Jenette would have enjoyed the book more as a short story, I think. Knowing the story brings you closer. Many reviewers have commented on how the author, Jeanette Winterson, chose to keep the narrator’s sexual gender a secret, but the novel has won both the Ferro-Grumley Award for Lesbian Fiction and the Lambda Literary Award for Lesbian Fictionprobably because women’s bodies are described in some detail and with a lot jeanettf passion by the nameless narrator.

She is also editor of a series of new editions of novels by Virginia Woolf published in the UK by Vintage. I know that’s supposed to be the heart of the novel, but after a couple sections, it was just so damn boring – I started skimming them.

I will have to buy it for myself. Books by Jeanette Winterson. More contemporary than Graham Greene’s The End of the Affair this narrative questions the responsibility of lovers to one another.
Sl the narrator details their sexual exploits with men and women, we are left still uncertain, and ultimately it doesn’t even matter. It’s not that I escriot excluded; I just find myself trying to reach depths in her writing that I don’t think she means to be reached, and as much as I like it, I can’t say I love it.
